Four seasons of meaningful production in Purdue's pass-heavy Big Ten attack gave O'Connell one of the deeper resumes in this class. Across 33 games, he completed 66.7% for 9,208 yards (279 per game) with 65 touchdowns, but the 30 career interceptions tell the other side. His 2021 season was comfortably the best: 71.6% completion, 3,712 yards, 309.3 per game, 28 touchdowns. The 2022 senior year regressed to 64.2% with 22 touchdowns and 13 interceptions in 12 games, a concerning trend. Even the 2020 COVID-shortened season showed promise at 305.3 yards per game despite only 3 games. At 210 pounds with negative-274 career rushing yards and 2 rushing touchdowns, O'Connell is among the most immobile quarterbacks to be drafted in years. He cannot create outside the structure, period. The 2.2:1 career TD/INT ratio and the senior-year regression are the red flags. R4.135 for a productive Big Ten pocket passer whose volume and accuracy are legitimate, but whose total immobility and turnover issues narrow the NFL path to a scheme-specific backup role.
