Mertz's career is a six-year exercise in inconsistency. Three seasons at Wisconsin produced completion rates of 61.3% (2020), 59.5% (2021), and 57.3% (2022) with 38 touchdowns against 26 interceptions across 31 games, including an 11-interception disaster in 2021. Then came the outlier: Florida in 2023, where Mertz suddenly looked like a different player, completing 72.8% for 2,878 yards at 261.6 per game with 20 touchdowns and just 3 interceptions in 11 games. The 2024 follow-up lasted only 5 games before injury, producing 76.6% completion but a meager 158.2 yards per game with 6 touchdowns and 2 picks. Career totals across 49 games: 64.8% completion, 8,942 yards at 182.5 per game, 64 touchdowns, 31 interceptions (2.1:1 ratio). At 212 pounds with -37 career rushing yards and no combine forty, there is absolutely zero mobility. 13 rushing touchdowns (all short yardage) are the only ground contribution. R6.197 for a pocket passer whose single season of real efficiency at Florida in 2023 sits against five years of mediocre-to-poor production, and the larger sample is hard to ignore.
